Again, I remind people (including well-meaning volunteers) that the correct spelling for the traditional synonym for Carpatho-Russian is “Rusin”, which has always meant “Russian person” — and NOT “Rusyn” which was invented just in recent decades to mean “NOT Russian”, and promoted by an anti-Russian researcher working closely with the Ukrainian-American establishment. Please help resist this deliberately erroneous mis-spelling which is INTENDED to split the traditional affinity of Carpatho-Russians with their spiritual and cultural family to the east.
Also, whenever we hear about fascist Galician troops, just remember that in the 1800s there was in Galicia a self-funded (ie. opposed by Austrian government, not funded elseswhere) “Society of Rev. Kachkovsky” which promoted the Russian identity and language throughout Galicia, one of the traditional Russian lands. This sense of Russian-ness became a target during Woirld War I when tens of thousands of Russian were executed throughout Galicia with the cooperation of those who were willing to accept the Ukrainian ideology. (See Talerhof and Terezin concentration camps 1914-1917, and many others.)
I have friends of mine who are Karpatsky-Rus and it depended on if they were Greek Catholic or Orthodox how much they identified with Russia per se. I know that they saw themselves separate
from Ukrainians.

There were TREASON trials in 1882 in Galician Rus’ and in 1913-early 1914 in Sub-Carpathian Rus against those people who dared convert to Orthodox faith. (Prison sentences, not executions yet, at that point). However, this was a pretext by Austro-Hungary, since by established agreement since the 1600s any Orthodox in the Hungarian Kingdom were under the Patriarch of Serbia! (Sort of like the West now sees “Russian aggression” under every bed.)
So in fact the centuries-long Russkost (Russian consciousness) of these areas was WITHIN THE BODY OF THE GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH of the time! There was no (presumed) religious distinction. My own grandparents would have been raised officially Greek Catholic, but everyone knew all along they were “Orthodox” since the prayerbooks and service books all said “pravoslavnyje”.
