The former are hopeless, but the latter still have some miniscule faith in their own judgement and faculties.

I have sympathy for these guys. They can still see and think and figure stuff out, it is just that they have been getting way more electric shocks than treats for using their brains and calling things as they see them, so, as in your apt metaphor, they are like fags from the fifties, having to use all sorts of strategems and code words to hint at their true natures, because when has any good ever come out of that?

Common sense is a deviant culture that dare not speak its name. ha ha. sob.
