I’d always assumed my mother became a hysterical lunatic as a result of my father leaving her just after I was born. Only now – 10 years after her death – do I realise she was a mad intolerable basket case before – and it was that which drove him away. Leaving me and my brother in the care of a power-crazed madwoman.
